Sealing Tech

Wiper Seals

Wipers are designed to prevent any contamination of the system by external particles or other environmental impacts during transaortic movements in cylinders and actuators. They also provide the static sealing function on the cylinder head versus the atmosphere. Some double-acting designs also reduce the drag oil film during outstroke.

The AD double wiper seal featuring a Slipper Seal design consists of a PTFE slide ring for the wiper function and an elastomer O-ring as a preloading element. It combines two functions: wiping against external contamination and a sealing function that reduces the residual oil film. The AD wiper seal is characterized by low break-away and sliding friction and can therefore be used in low-lube conditions as well.

Due to the material combination of the slide ring (PTFE) and the O-ring (elastomer), this product is suitable for a wide range of applications, especially for aggressive media and/or high temperatures. Several compounds can alternatively be selected according to the specific application profile.

Wiper rings / seals serve to safeguard axially movable rods and pistons against ingress of dust, dirt, sand and swarf, thus protecting the guiding elements and seals and extending the service life of the sealing system.

  • Excellent wear resistance.
  • Minimal break-away and dynamic friction and no stick-slip tendency ensures uniform motion even at low speeds.
  • Good energy efficiency due to low friction.
  • High temperature resistance assured by suitable O-Ring compound selection.
  • Adaptable to nearly all media thanks to high chemical resistance of the sealing ring and large O-Ring compound selection.
  • Dimensions according to DIN ISO 6195, Type D.
  • Available in diameters from 4 to 3000 mm.
  • Installation in closed and undercut housings.

Range of application:

  • The AD product series is suitable for a wide range of applications, especially for aggressive media and/or high temperatures.

Maximum Operating Temperature: 100 °C

Maximum Surface Speed: 2 m/sec

Unit of Measure: Length: mm

Thermal Application Type: Standard moderate Temperature (-35 C to 100 C) °C

The Ultrathan® AH double wiper seal serves to prevent ingress of dust, dirt, sand and swarf into hydraulic cylinders. This reduces the risk of scoring on the piston rod caused by external contaminants embedded in the guidance. The good wiping effect is achieved by the special design of the wiper lip. In addition, the sealing lip facing the medium reduces the residual oil film. The proven Ultrathan® P5008 compound stands for high abrasion resistance, minor permanent deformation, and robustness against external mechanical impact. The wiper seal is securely held in place in the axially open installation housing by means of a press fit of the metal case vis-à-vis the inner diameter of the groove.

  • Robust seal profile for harshest operating conditions.
  • Extreme wear resistance.
  • Suitable for fully automatic installation
  • Product geometry prevents dirt deposits at the front face of the cylinder.
  • Simple fabrication of the housing.

Range of application:

  • Hydraulic cylinders

To check current tooling, review the Part Number Look-up document. Contact Parker for requirements outside typical ranges. Parker’s AY profile, premium double-lip wiper is used in light to heavy-duty hydraulics. When used in high pressure applications with the proper Parker rod seals, the AY profile complements the sealing system by providing an additional beveled sealing lip, yielding excellent film-breaking and the driest rod sealing available. These dual acting features along with its space-saving single-gland configuration, enable it to be used by itself in low pressure applications as both the rod seal and the wiper. Knife-trimmed sealing lips ensure the best possible film breaking.

NOTE: When using the AY wiper in conjunction with other rod seals, it is important to select a rod seal profile that enables pressure relief of fluid into the system, otherwise a pressure trap may form between the wiper and rod seal. Suggested rod profiles are Parker’s BT Profile, BS Profile, and B3 Profile U-cup seals.

Parker’s SHD Profile wiper seals is an outstanding choice for light and medium duty hydraulic and pneumatic applications.  The slotted heel design prevents pressure traps from forming between the rod seal and wiper. The snap-in design is oversized, ensuring a snug fit, excellent stability, and that the wiper lip maintains contact with the rod at all times.   This makes the SHD Profile a great all-round industrial snap-in wiper that retrofits many typical commercial glands. Parker offers broad tooling availability, up to 30″, making the SHD a good choice for large rod diameters.

The self-retaining EW seal/wiper combines the properties of the proven E9 high-temperature seal with a metallic wiper for particularly dirt-prone and harsh environments. Thus, the EW seal/wiper provides a scraper function in addition to the sealing function. It is used for scraping strongly adhering particles off the cylinder rod, thereby protecting the seal against excessive wear. The combination of the metallic wiper and wear-resistant sealing compound achieves considerably longer service life.

The wear-resistant Ultrathan AF wiper seal / ring serves to prevent ingress of dust, dirt, sand and swarf into the hydraulic cylinder. This reduces the risk of scoring on the piston rod caused by external contamination embedded in the guidance. The good wiping effect is achieved by the special design of the wiper lip. The proven P5008 polyurethane compound stands for abrasion resistance, minor permanent deformation and robustness against external mechanical impact. The wiper seal is securely held in place in the axially open groove via press-fit of the metal jacket vis-à-vis the inner groove diameter. As the wiper lip is flush with the cylinder head it is largely protected against external mechanical damage.

  • Robust seal profile for harshest operating conditions.
  • Extreme wear resistance.
  • Suitable for fully automatic installation
  • Dimensions according to DIN ISO 6195, Type B.
  • Simple fabrication of the housing.

The A7 wiper seal / ring primarily serves as a scraper and additionally prevents ingress of dust, dirt, sand and swarf into dynamic rod guidances. This is achieved by its special shape and largely prevents scoring, protects the guidance parts and extends the service life of the seals. The A7 wiper ring is used to scrape heavily adhering particles off the cylinder rod. It should always be used in combination with an elastomer wiper seal. In this configuration, the A7 wiper seal closes the rod sealing system vis-à-vis the environment of the hydraulic cylinder. Pressure loading against the back of the ring should be prevented.

  • Outstanding scraper properties for harsh sticking particles.
  • Extreme wear resistance.

Range of application:

  • The A7 wiper ring is used in axially operated rods in hydraulic and pneumatic working cylinders, plungers and rod guidances in earth moving and mining equipment.

Several compounds can alternatively be selected according to the specific application profile. Wiper rings serve to safeguard axially movable rods and pistons against ingress of dust, dirt, sand and swarf, thus protecting the guiding elements and seals and extending the service life of the sealing system.

  • Installation in closed and undercut housings.
  • Available in diameters from 4 to 3000 mm.
  • Additional sizes of machined products available on short notice.
