Parker rod seals for hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders and actuators seal the applied system pressure against the atmosphere side. Their purpose is to prevent external leakage and thus avoid contamination of the ambient environment. They are available as single-acting and double acting seals. High-pressure applications usually require a tandem rod sealing system including a buffer seal. Rod seals typically interact with wiper elements in the cylinder sealing system. A wide range of compound and profile configurations is available to meet the specific application profile. There are rod seals available that comply with ISO 6020, ISO 5597 and ISO 7425-2 standards.

The single-acting OD rod sealing set featuring a Slipper Seal® design consists of a PTFE rod seal and an elastomer O-ring as a preloading element. The asymmetric cross-section of the seal has been designed for optimum return of drag oil during the stroke in both directions. The optimum sealing effect is achieved by installation in a tandem arrangement in combination with a double wiper ring. The OD product series is particularly well suited for piston rods in control cylinders, servo-assisted systems, machine tools and quickacting cylinders. The sealing set is successfully used in the automotive industry (e.g. in shock absorbers) and the process industry as well. Due to the material combination of the slide ring (PTFE) and the O-ring (elastomer), this product is suitable for a wide range of applications, especially for aggressive media and/or high temperatures. Several alternative compounds may be selected depending on the specific application profile.

The BS Ultrathan® rod seal is a U-ring with interference fit on the outer diameter and a secondary sealing lip. It is extremely wear-resistant, ensures reliable load holding performance and is suitable for high-pressure hydraulic applications. The additional lip results in a larger deposit of lubrication film underneath the seal. This largely prevents dry running and higher wear, and achieves longer service life. Due to its radial preloading, the secondary sealing lip reliably wipes off the liquid film even in low pressure conditions or no pressurized movement of the rod. For telescopic cylinders, we recommend the version with a 4-mm profile width.
Range of application:
Mainly for sealing piston rods and plungers in heavy-duty applications in mobile and stationary hydraulics.
The range of dimensions is primarily oriented to the requirements of ISO 5597 and ISO 3320 for housings and diameters.

The BU Ultrathan® rod seal is a compact seal with an integrated anti-extrusion ring. It is frequently used as a buffer seal within sealing systems such as those utilized in construction machine cylinders. Construction machine cylinders operate in harsh conditions in which pressure peaks of up to 1000 bar frequently occur. The BU rod seal is installed upstream to isolate such loads from the secondary seal. Due to its special shape, the seal (like a return valve) is able to return pressure that may build up between the primary and the secondary seal into the system. A single or tandem arrangement of this product series is possible as well.

The LCD Profile is specifically engineered to meet the extreme performance requirements of oil and gas drilling, marine riser and pressure control applications. Constructed from premiere HNBR and FKM Parker materials which are sour gas resistant, and tested to industry standards, including API 6A and 16C, the LDC profile features high-squeeze geometry and multiple specialized sealing lips to deliver robust leakage control for longer life and corrosion resistance.
While its geometric silhouette gives an appearance of having an o-ring energizer, the LCD profile is a onepiece, homogenous seal. Single piece construction provides greater capability over traditional o-spring energized seals in handling rapid system depressurization since there’s no possibility of an energizer becoming dislodged during rapid pressure change.
Back-bevel primary sealing lips provide excellent film breaking and leak-free service. Improved stability is achieved from multiple sealing lips activated by compressive force, which not only improve stability, but are true sealing lips. These dual I.D. and O.D. sealing lips at the heel provide aggressive seal performance from the back side to minimize vulnerability and exposure vulnerable to sea water and fluids which corrode the primary sealing surface.
With more of the primary sealing surface protected from corrosion, seals last longer. Scheduled drill string rebuilds due to corrosion and seal failure can be extended, maximizing up time and improving productivity.
Our standard availability is in Parker’s premiere, specialty oilfield elastomers which include HNBR and FKM compounds which have been evaluated to API 6A FF/HH, API 16C, ISO 23936-2, TOTAL and NACE TM0192-2003 and are compatible with diesel muds. Our materials’ thermal capability spans a wide temperature range, from -49F to 400F (-45C to 204C), depending on material selection The LCD profile also accommodates easy retrofitting since it is designed to fit standard groove dimensions utilized by a wide range of commercially available seals having the same seal height and cross-section.
