Rod Seals

Parker rod seals for hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders and actuators seal the applied system pressure against the atmosphere side. Their purpose is to prevent external leakage and thus avoid contamination of the ambient environment. They are available as single-acting and double acting seals. High-pressure applications usually require a tandem rod sealing system including a buffer seal. Rod seals typically interact with wiper elements in the cylinder sealing system. A wide range of compound and profile configurations is available to meet the specific application profile. There are rod seals available that comply with ISO 6020, ISO 5597 and ISO 7425-2 standards.

The PARK-O-PAK® rod seal BA made of wear-resistant Ultrathan® is a compact seal design for hydraulic applications. Due to its symmetric design, the seal can also be used as a piston seal. The O-ring guarantees the pre-loading of the seal lips, even under low pressures or vacuum. Due to the good setting behavior of the elastomer O-ring, this pre-loading is largely constant. As system pressure increases, compression of the sealing edges rises due to the pressure-dependent deformation of the seal profile.

There are three variants of the PARK-O-PAK® product series. The product series BA is suitable for standard grooves, e.g. according to ISO 5597. The product series SA is suitable for axially short compact designs. The product series TA is suitable for radially slim designs, e.g. for telescopic cylinders.

  • Robust seal profile for harshest operating conditions.
  • Extreme wear resistance.
  • Easier installation.

The self-retaining Ultrathan® EN rod seal/wiper ring for piston rods of pneumatic cylinders performs two functions: sealing and wiping. The Ultrathan® compound is characterized by extremely high wear resistance. The dirt shield formed at the wiper prevents moisture from migrating underneath the seal into the groove. As a result, corrosion which frequently occurs inside the groove can be avoided. In addition, due to the absence of undercuts and dead spaces, the assembly space in front of the seal is easy to clean. This makes the EN seal/wiper ring particularly well suited for food and pharmaceutical production and for all other applications requiring easy- to-clean components.

  • Bi-functional element: seal and wiper.
  • Robust seal profile for harshest operating conditions.
  • Extreme wear resistance.
  • No risk of corrosion since the combined retainer and wiper part eliminates the need for additional wire circlips.
  • Long service life due to coordinated geometries of the functional lips and compound selection.
  • Smooth running due to optimum lubricant-retaining sealing lip geometry.
  • Excellent media resistance in case of suitable compound selection.
  • Suitable compounds available for special requirements of the food processing industry.
  • Identical housing for E7, E8, E9, EU, EF, EN, EW and ET.
  • Installation in open housings.
  • Low compression set.
  • The coordinated geometries of the seal and wiper lips achieve favorable friction coefficients and long service life.
  • Product geometry prevents dirt deposits at the front face of the cylinder.

Range of application:

  • The EN rod seal/wiper has been developed for hygienically sensitive applications, such as clean room technology, medical device technology, pharmaceuticals and food applications.

To check current tooling, review the Part Number Look-up document. Contact Parker for requirements outside typical ranges. Parker’s Type B PolyPak® (BPP Profile) is a squeeze seal with a symmetrical profile for use in either rod or piston applications in hydraulic systems. The rectangular shape of its cross section ensures stability in the gland.

The standard Molythane shell (seal body) provides high wear resistance and the O-ring energizer element functions as a spring to maintain sealing contact under low pressure or vacuum applications.   The bevelled lip design of the Type B PolyPak is excellent for cutting fluid film. The sharp beveled lip is formed by a precision knife trimming process.

A wide selection of sizes and alternate compounds allow this profile to match up with many hydraulic applications. The Type B PolyPak is an economical choice as a stand-alone seal or can be used in tandem with a buffer seal. In piston applications, this seal will function as a unidirectional seal. Dual Type B PolyPak seals should not be installed back-to-back in bi-directional pressure applications, as a pressure trap between the seals may occur. Instead, for bi-directional piston sealing, incorporate a PIP Ring®.

The 8400 style utilizes a beveled lip, ideal for wiping fluid film. Available in a variety of elastomer compounds to cover a wide range of applications. The 8400 U seal is primarily designed for pneumatic applications to 250 psi, however, it can also be used in low to medium pressure hydraulic applications. The pressure range of the U ring seal may be extended by incorporating an 8700 Series anti-extrusion back-up.

  • Low friction
  • Wide temperature range (-450F to +600F)
  • Ultra broad chemical compatibility
  • Dry running ability in dynamic sealing applications
  • Resistance to degradation, heat aging and physical property alteration during temperature cycling
  • High surface speed

FBC-V series FlexiSeals are precision machined to fit inch/fractional or metric rod and piston glands.    Standard Materials (seal jacket or body):

Spring materials:  Medium load cantilever springs are available in corrosion-resistant metal alloys, including stainless steel and Elgiloy. Alternate Materials:  For applications that may require an alternate material, please contact your Parker EPS representative. Lip Style:  The beveled (or chamfered) ID and OD lip shape allows for ease of installation and permits lubrication to nest under the lip and feed through in reciprocating dynamic applications.  The result is a microscopic film of lubrication that increases seal and hardware service life.  The beveled lip creates a narrow contact footprint which concentrates sealing force on a single point, maximizing sealing ability and minimizing friction.

Pressure Rating:  Standard FlexiSeal designs are rated to 3,000 psi when used in glands conforming to the dimensions supplied in Parker’s PTFE Lip Seal Design Guide, Catalog EPS5340, using materials that meet the temperature requirements of the application.  Extended heel radial FlexiSeals are available which increase the pressure rating to 10,000 psi under the same conditions.

Parker’s BD Profile with Back-up is a single-acting, non-symmetrical profile rod seal for hydraulics. The o-ring energizer functions as a spring to maintain sealing contact for improved cold temperature sealing, and under low pressure or vacuum applications. The knife trimmed, beveled lip does an excellent job wiping fluid film. Its rectangular shaped cross section ensures stability in the gland. A stabilizing lip is located below the primary sealing lip, just above the base of the seal, to provide enhanced sealing performance and ensure a tight, stable fit in the gland. The heel design incorporates a positively actuated back-up ring for anti-extrusion and extended high pressure sealing capability.

Available in Parker’s proprietary urethanes, the BD Profile provides

  • Long life
  • Extrusion resistance
  • Low compression set
  • Shock load resistance, and
  • Excellent sealing performance at zero pressure

The BD Profile with Back-up is designed to be used as a stand-alone rod seal or for use with the BR Profile rod buffer seal for more critical sealing applications.

Improved extrusion resistance: For enhanced extrusion protection, the BD Profile with Back-up is designed with a positively actuated back-up ring located in the heel.
